Governors

Stebon School is governed by a Governing Board, Resources Committee and Pupil Achievement Committee. The people who make up that board & their duties & responsibilities are outlined below.

Who are we?

Well, there are 8 of us, including a chair & vice-chair, each bringing different sets of skills & experience to the board:

  • Peter Sherratt, Chair (Full Governing Body & Pupil Achievement and Well being Committee) – a lawyer by profession, Peter has a wealth of experience of school governance; he is also the chair of governors at Oaklands, a secondary school also in Tower Hamlets.
  • Michael Keating, Vice-chair (Full Governing Body & Resources Committee) - Michael has served Tower Hamlets for many years. The considerable local knowledge and understanding he has is an asset to our Governing body. He sits on the Resources Committee.
  • Mark Simmons chair (Full Governing Body & Resources Committee) – Mark works as a lawyer, and is our newest Governor.  He is committed to ensuring that Stebon continues to thrive as a place of educational excellence, social development and community advancement.
  • Kamal Hussain (Full Governing Body & Pupil Achievement Committee) - Kamal is a secondary school teacher at Swanlea. He is a Stebon alumni, he is extremely passionate about raising aspirations and expectations of young pupils.
  • Helal Miah (Full Governing Body & Pupil Achievement Committee) - Helal works as a Passport Officer in Her Majesty's Passport Office. He is another Alumni, he is keen to help Stebon and its multicultural community to develop and maintain its position as a great school with brilliant education and social development.
  • Catrin Szweczyk (Full Governing Body & Pupil Achievement Committee) - Catrin is an experienced teacher at Stebon. Her hopes for the school as it expands and extends into our local community is for it to continue its role as an outstanding provider of education for the children.
  • Jo Franklin (Full Governing Body & Resources Committee) & Jeremy Iver (Full Governing Body & Pupil Achievement Committee)- Co-headteachers of Stebon and Bygrove Primary School. Jointly they have over 20 years of experience as headteachers.

 What do we do?

We make collective decisions as part of the Governing Body Board. Our main purpose is to help raise the educational standards and performance of Stebon by supporting the work of the Headteachers and school staff. We ensure that the school runs effectively, that quality teaching and learning is happening across the school, that the budget is spent wisely and that Stebon provides good value for money.

We make strategic decisions on how the school is run and are answerable to parents, the wider community and most importantly the children who attend Stebon. We govern rather than manage giving direction and focus. The management of the school remains the responsibility of the headteachers. We are responsible for:

  • Appointing headteachers and deputy headteachers and ensuring the implementation of a range of personnel procedures
  • Governing the school's budget
  • Determining aims, policies and priorities for Stebon
  • Monitoring and evaluating the work of the school and setting targets
  • Ensuring high levels of attendance and good standards of pupil behaviour
  • Ensuring that all children in the schools have access to a broad and balanced curriculum, suitable to age, aptitude and ability, which prepares them for adult life
  • Ensuring the health and safety of pupils and staff

We meet 6 times annually, once each half term.
