Governors

Stebon School is governed by a Local Governing Board. The people who make up that board & their duties & responsibilities are outlined below.

Who are we?

Well, there are 7 of us, including a chair & vice-chair, each bringing different sets of skills & experience to the board:

  • Peter Sherratt, Chair  – A lawyer by profession, Peter has a wealth of experience of school governance; he is also the chair of governors at Oaklands, a secondary school also in Tower Hamlets.
  • Michael Keating, Vice-chair - Michael has served Tower Hamlets for many years. The considerable local knowledge and understanding he has is an asset to our Governing body.
  • Mark Simmons - Co-opted Governor - Mark works as a lawyer, and is our newest Governor.  He is committed to ensuring that Stebon continues to thrive as a place of educational excellence, social development and community advancement.
  • Geraldine O'Grady – Co-opted Governor - Geraldine has been in the teaching profession for over 33 years. She has worked as a mainstream primary and special school teacher as well as a tutor for students on undergraduate and postgraduate education courses. From 2012 – 2019, she was the Teaching School Director at a large special school in East London. Currently, she is working as a part-time Initial Teacher Training Tutor for LETTA.
  • Tilal Mustafa – Co-opted Governor - Tilal is a pharmaceutical and health technology professional. He is passionate about an education which is inclusive and accessible for all. As a former scientist he has a keen interest in the impact of technology in the healthcare sector. As a new board member, Tilal is looking forward to working with other board members to ensure that Stebon continues to deliver an excellent curriculum that inspires children to excel in their future studies and becoming successful leaders in their future careers.

  • Kamal Hussain - Parent Governor - Kamal is a secondary school teacher at Swanlea. He is a Stebon alumni, he is extremely passionate about raising aspirations and expectations of young pupils.

  • Jennifer Noble - Staff Governor - Jennifer is our Trust leader for Performance and Music. She has a background in Musical Theatre and Film with experience in dancing and singing professionally for feature films, TV and on stage. She works closely in partnerships with Disney, Eastside Education, Thames Music and Shakespeare Schools Festival for the LETTA trust and is passionate about bringing opportunities to the children of Stebon; supporting the trust's creative and inclusive curriculum.
  • Jeremy Iver - Headteacher - Jeremy has been a Headteacher at Stebon from 2012. He has been serving the children of Tower Hamlets from 1997.

 What do we do?

We make collective decisions as part of the Local Governing Board. Our main purpose is to help raise the educational standards and performance of Stebon by supporting the work of the Headteachers and school staff. We ensure that the school runs effectively, that quality teaching and learning is happening across the school.

We make decisions on how the school is run and are answerable to parents, the wider community and most importantly the children who attend Stebon. We govern rather than manage giving direction and focus. The management of the school remains the responsibility of the headteachers. We are responsible for:

  • Determining aims and priorities for Stebon
  • Monitoring and evaluating the work of the school and setting targets
  • Ensuring high levels of attendance and good standards of pupil behaviour
  • Ensuring that all children in the schools have access to a broad and balanced curriculum, suitable to age, aptitude and ability, which prepares them for adult life
  • Ensuring the health and safety of pupils and staff

We meet 3 times annually, once each term.
